Origins Of 7 Card Stud
UK Poker Rooms

Seven Card Stud is today the most popular form of Stud Poker, which is thought to have originated during the American Civil War, and includes other games such as Five Card Stud, and Razz.

Before the recent increase in popularity of Texas Hold’em, Seven Card Stud was the most popular form of poker in home games and casinos, and is still present in many. Online, although now less popular that both Texas Hold’em and Omaha, Seven Card Stud games and tournaments can be found at most internet poker rooms.

The Basics Of 7 Card Stud

Play begins with each player being dealt two face-down cards and one face-up card. The first round of betting then takes place, beginning with the player who has the highest face-up card. A second face-up card is then dealt to every player, followed by another round of betting.

After a further two rounds of dealing face-up cards and betting, there follows one last deal where each remaining player is dealt a final face-down card, followed by a final, fifth round of betting, and then the showdown, where the player who is able to make the best five-card hand out of the seven cards he was dealt, wins.

7 Card Stud Variants
UK Poker Rooms

The most commonly seen Seven Card Stud variant in online poker rooms is Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo. With this variant, play takes place in the usual way, but at the end of the game, the pot is divided in two and split between the player with the highest scoring five-card hand, and the player with the lowest scoring five-card hand. In some cases this can be the same player!
